This pretty lady is Joyce. Joyce, like far too many of our rescues, came to us with heartworms. But she was one of the lucky ones; she found Henrico Humane Society and a wonderful foster home where she could receive the treatment she needed to survive.
The American Heartworm Society estimates that over 1 million dogs in the United States are heartworm positive. Is your dog one of them? Did you know that heartworms can grow to over 12 inches long? They cause lung disease, heart failure, organ damage, and even death. While treatment for heartworms in dogs is available, it is not always successful, it is very hard on the dog, and it much more expensive than monthly preventative. A one-year supply of monthly heartworm preventative is less than $150, whereas treatment for heartworms can cost between $700 and $1800. Is your dog protected?
Donations from our wonderful supporters mean that we can help save the lives of dogs like Joyce.
