Frequently Asked Questions

  • I need to re-home my pet. Are there any resources available to me?

    • Check out this website. It will allow you to post your pet for adoption and provides a lot of great information on how to re-home your pet.

  • I want to neuter my pet, but I cannot afford it right now. Do you have any suggestions?

    • Check out our SpayRVA program. We can’t guarantee that you will qualify, but at the very least, we may be able to point you to some other options in the Richmond area. Email us if you have any questions.

  • Help…my pet is missing! What should I do?

    • In addition to calling your local animal control and posting on applicable social media groups, post your pet on Petco Lost Love. It’s a national resource that uses pet facial recognition technology to match lost and found pets.

    • Animal control phone numbers can be found at the bottom of this page.

  • I found a stray animal. Can you help?

    • Henrico Humane Society does not pick up stray or abandoned animals. When you find a stray animal, contact your local animal control to report the animal. Animal control phone numbers can be found at the bottom of this page.

    • Stray animals have to be reported to local authorities and held (at the shelter or in your home) for a stray hold period (usually about 10 days) to give the potential owner time to reclaim the animal. After the hold period is when the animal can be rehomed. If you fear there is an injured or abused animal, call your local animal control immediately. Animal control phone numbers can be found at the bottom of this page.

  • I’ve found a feral cat colony. Can you help?

    • Henrico Humane Society does not pick up or remove feral/community cat colonies. If you find a colony of cats that you are concerned for, please check with your neighbors to find out if the cats are being cared for and if they are spayed and neutered. A good indicator if cats are being properly cared for is a notch in their ear to indicate they have been altered and vetted.

    • Removing cats from their location is not always the best option. Here is helpful information on how to manage community cats. If you have additional questions concerning feral/community cats, please email us.

  • How old do I have to be to adopt a dog or cat from Henrico Humane Society?

    • Applicants must be at least 21 years old to adopt an animal.
