Meet Simon: A True Rescue Story

Simon’s journey began at a local animal shelter, where he was facing a challenging future. With heartworms and a serious heart condition, his chances seemed bleak until Henrico Humane Society rescued him.

Simon found his forever home with an incredible family who understands the joy of providing a senior dog with the love he deserves. Now 11 years old, Simon is basking in the sun, lounging on the couch, and enjoying snuggles with his new friend, a senior cat.

We’re committed not only to Simon, but to his new family as well by providing heartworm preventatives until he is retested to confirm his treatment was successful.  Simon's story is a testament to the power of second chances and the impact of compassionate adoption.

When you support HHS by donating, fostering or adopting, you allow us to help more animals like Simon get the loving homes they deserve, whether they're puppies or treasured seniors. Thank you for making these miracles possible!

The Miraculous Rescue of Libby: A Tale of Hope and Healing

This is the inspiring story of Libby who was rescued just two days away from a tragic fate - her journey to recovery is nothing short of miraculous. Libby was living in a shelter and had a severe ear infection which was causing her immense pain. The infection was not only affecting her quality of life, but also posed a serious risk to her overall well-being.

Henrico Humane Society stepped in to help, because that’s what we do! Many of the sick or injured animals in shelters get overlooked, but we try to rescue as many as we possibly can.

Libby was taken to see Dr. Amy Gifford of James River Vet, whose expertise and dedication plays a pivotal role in Libby’s story. While the usual practice is to treat one ear at a time, Dr. Gifford recognized the urgency of Libby's condition and operated on both ears simultaneously to give her the best possible outcome. The complicated surgery cost over $5,000 - the generosity of our donors enabled us to provide Libby the opportunity for a brighter future.

Libby is recovering from her surgery well and is looking forward to finding her forever home. If you’re interested in adopting this precious pup, please email dogs@henricohumane.org.

If you’re inspired by Libby’s story and want to contribute to our ongoing efforts, you can make a donation or register for our upcoming dog walk on Saturday, September 14 by clicking the button below.

Your generosity and compassion are what make these stories of recovery possible. Together, we are making miracles happen and giving animals like Libby a second chance at life. Thank you for your support!

From Despair to Joy: The Story of April and June

Meet April and June, two brave puppies from the same litter who faced a battle against parvo, a life-threatening disease. These little warriors were on death's doorstep, but received the intense treatment they needed to pull through which cost of over $5,000.

After their recovery, April and June were placed in loving foster homes where they continued to thrive. And the best news? Both pups have found their forever families!  Even more amazing, they live close to each other, so they have the chance to grow up together and remain best friends.

A huge thank you to our dedicated fosters and supporters who made this happy ending possible.  Their treatment would have never been possible without our generous donors whose generosity and compassion truly make a difference in the lives of these precious animals.
