With generous donations from people like you, Henrico Humane Society can help cats and kittens that would otherwise be overlooked or left behind in local shelters. Weebles is one of those kittens.
Weebles was rescued from a local shelter when he was about 5 weeks old. We knew that he was suffering from cerebellar hypoplasia, which is a developmental condition in which the part of the brain that controls things like balance and coordination is underdeveloped. These kitties are not in pain and the condition is not contagious, but they do tend to be a bit wobbly when they move. We also knew that he would require treatment for what the shelter thought was a severe eye infection. What we didn’t know was that rather than an infection, this poor little guy had eyes that had not fully developed, so he was completely blind. The fabulous doctors at Animal Eye Care of Richmond explained to us that he would likely need surgery to clean out the underdeveloped tissue and sew up the eyes, but they recommended that we wait until he was a little bigger.
In the meantime, this handsome fellow caught the eye of his wonderful forever family and was adopted into a loving forever home. Because of his known health conditions, Weebles became a Sponsorship kitty, meaning that Henrico Humane Society offered to cover the cost of his surgery and any related problems when he was old enough to move forward with the surgery. We chose to have the eye surgery and his neuter performed at the same time, to limit the number of surgeries this little guy would undergo. Unfortunately, as the doctor was performing his neuter surgery, Weebles’ breathing became irregular. An emergency x-ray revealed an enlarged heart, so they had to wake Weebles up before his eye surgery could be performed. We are now working with his doctor to properly diagnose and treat his heart condition and will revisit his eye surgery in the future when it is safe for him.
So far, Weebles’ medical expenses have exceeded $1000, and we expect those expenses to continue to grow as we work to treat his health conditions. Thanks to your generous donations, Henrico Humane Society can ensure that Weebles will receive whatever medical care he needs to live a happy, healthy life for as long as possible.
