On Friday, October 6, 2006, the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act was signed into law by President Bush.  This legislation requires local and state sitaster plans to include provisions for household pets and service animals during an emergency or natural disaster.  The PETS Act will ensure that Americans will never have to face the horrifying choice of abandoning their pet or staying with their pet to face a potentially life-threatening situation.  For more information, visit http://www.hsus.org/legislation_laws/federal_legislation/companion_animals/2005_PETS_evacuation.html

CONGRESS VICTORY FOR ANIMAL PROTECTION

Congress recently passed two important animal protection acts‹one will help ensure pets are saved during disasters and the other protects exotic species.

The first act passed was the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act, which will require local and state disaster plans to include provisions for household pets and service animals in the event of a major disaster or emergency. The other act passed was the new Pension Protection Act which contains provisions that tighten the laws on charitable giving and closes the trophy hunting tax scam loophole. Closing this loophole will help save rare wildlife around the world and save American taxpayers an estimated $43 million over the next decade.
