PRECAUTIONS CAN HELP PREVENT DOG BITES

Here are some steps for preventing dog bites, from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control:

  • Spend time with a dog before taking it into your house.

  • Use caution in introducing a dog or puppy into a home where there's an infant or toddler.

  • Be sensitive to cues that a child is fearful around a dog and, if so, delay acquiring a dog.

  • Spay or neuter virtually all dogs. This frequently reduces aggressive tendencies.

  • Never leave young children alone with any dog.

  • Teach your dog submissive behavior. Examples, rolling over to expose abdomen, relinquishing food without growling. Immediately Seek Professional advice, from verinarians. animal behaviorists or responsible breeders, if your dog develops aggressive or un desirable behavior. Do not play aggressive games with your dog, such as wrestling.

  • Never approach an unfamiliar dog.

  • Never run from a dog and scream.

  • Remain motionless when approached by an unfamiliar dog: "be still like a tree."

  • If knocked down by a dog, roll into a ball and "be still like a log."

  • Avoid direct eye contact with a dog.

  • Do not disturb a dog who is sleeping, eating or caring for puppies.

  • Do not pet a dog without allowing it to see and sniff you first.
